ASB Calculator V3

Thanks to M. Ridzuan’s time and neater Excel skill, he came out with some modifications to my current ASB calculator V2 and improved it here and there. Here are the new features of ASB Calculator V3:

  1. Monthly and yearly contributions are editable for every year.
  2. Users can now scroll the table without losing the headers’ sight.
  3. Mini Loan calculator to show how much you lose to the bank.
  4. Starting date and year of investment is now specifiable.

I have run through the formulas used in the Excel and everything seems okay. Download it and take a look.

hello irwan
i’m new with this asb thing
so i dont understand a thing
i plan to take a loan around rm500 per month for 20 years,
but in the pamphlet i got from maybank, shows that i’ll get rm70,000 after 20 years.i’m confused.by calculations,rm500 x 12months x 20 years should be rm 120,000
is there any website or any source that i can read to get full understanding how this asb actually works? thank u so much

[Reply]

hi sufi.
If u use the asb calc, for investment of RM500/month for 20 years, at div & bonus rate of 7% and 1% respectively, … and say u start investing on jan 2008, by jan 2027 u’ll have RM244,003.71.

[Reply]

salam en sufi…saya dah lamer melabur dlm asb..sy telh meminjam loan as sebanyak 20k n bayar rm210 sebulan selama 12 tahun..soalan sy ialah, which one better?invest in unit trust or in asb for long term plan

[Reply]

mike reply on June 20th, 2008:

hi,

before i start, the full picture is this: asb & UT are the same thing. they are like ermmm both are like cars, one is toyota and one is alfa romeo. hope you can relate. both have their pro and cons, be it the car or the unit trust.

which one is better asb or UT for long term investment/plan? it depends actually. if economy is good, UT is better as return can easily top 30% (compare to your asb 9% – pfttt!) but when economy bad, asb is better because guaranteed capital. during bad times, your ut can devalue a lot ( i mean A LOT!)

no hard & fast rule when to enter market to buy which trusts. since you’re talking about long term investment, the stupid-proof method is to invest both at 50-50. asb & ut.

Irwan…I’ve using your ASB calculator from ver1 till now…which I really appreciate.

Recently, I found a website (www.bebas-hutang.com) has uses similar ASB calculator format as yours. I am not sure if you’re aware of it.

i just love using the asb calculator. i’ve been using it since early last year…the difference between the calculated dividend n bonus is +/- RM 1 (for 2008). Having the calculator is like a motivator to invest more…coz u know what u are getting at the end of the year. Thanks Mr. Irwan n Mr. Ridzuan for cracking ur heads in creating this!

[Reply]

Your calculator is wrong.
The declared dividend is an annual dividend. Your amount in the bank is not compounded on a monthly basis as your calculator indicate (I sure wish it is!). Its updated on a yearly basis after the dividend is declared. One can go to the bank and check their monthly balance and they will see that minus their payments, it has not increased. Only after Dec, you will see a sudden jump in your account book which is related to the dividend and bonus.

Irwan reply on January 27th, 2009:

Hi gabriel,

the increase in each month is due to monthly investment, not from the dividend. If you put zero in monthly adjustment(it’s on the leftmost side), the money will not increase until the year end.

thanks

[...] b) ASB Calculator [...]

I,ve tried your calculation basis, but it is not the same with my bonus for 2008. How to calculate when we withdraw an amount of money in any of the month?
Plus, max amount of fund allowed is 200k, thus it will affect your excel schedule.

[Reply]

nak tanya pasal limit pelaburan 200k.. apa makna nya.. kalau kita ada 250k dlm tu termasuk dengan dividen yg ada, dividen tahunan kita dikira based on 200k je ke..

[Reply]

Nizami reply on February 19th, 2009:

The limit is 200k, so if you have >200k, then the calculated balance for interest and bonus will be based on 200k only.
So, it is advisable for you to withdraw the excess and invest it in another fund, ASW or ASD.

[Reply]

Irwan, I’m suggesting you put these commands in your calculator:

For beginning amount;
=IF(U10200000,U10-(U10-200000),IF(U10=200000,U10+0)))
For jan;
=IF(F11200000,F11-(F11-200000),IF(F11=200000,F11+0)))
For feb to dec;
=IF(G11200000,G11-(G11-200000),IF(G11=200000,G11+0)))

[Reply]

Sorry..the formula is not complete when I paste it. How can this happen?
I try it one more time;

So this proves that for most cases, instead of taking the loan, you use the exact amount of monthly installment the loan would have cost and auto-deduct into ASB monthly, you actually make more.

[Reply]

Salam.
Are you sure about this? Then why do banks give out loans of more than 200K?

regards.

[Reply]

The give loans to make some profit. Isn’t that what banks do? Also to them it’s a very low risk loan, coz the collateral is your ASB sijil itself. Just try the calculator and compare, if you take x amoung of loan, put that loan money into ASB. The use 2nd senario, the exact amount you pay monthly to the bank, instead just use that amount to top up your ASB monthly and the see. Caveat – i guess is suddenly ASB gives like huge BONUS then maybe loan works. ps- bonus so far have always been based on your savings of 10year average, not 1 year average.

[Reply]

salam… nak tanye mcmne kite nak kire pulangan yg kite akan dapat bile kite saving dlm ASB.

sebagai contoh sy start saving rm1000 pd jan 2007.
so after 1 year.
katekan asb pulangan 7%.
so berape pulangan yg sy akan dpt?
ape maksud agihan pendapatan tahunan yg dlm asb 2?
sy x phm…

Salam to all,

And umur saya sekarang 26 tahun. So saye nak share sikit sebanyak pengalaman pasal ASB.

For me, I start with RM100k when I was 22(2005). Actually masa tu dapat bonus dari company, so I commit pay 1 year installment sedepuk so I tak payah nak fikir pasal ni tiap tiap bulan.

And the next year (2006), I loan lagi 100k. So my dividen earning every year now is RM17,100 (7+1.5% for 200k). My loan repayment now has increased to RM12,552 (RM1,024/monthly) per year. So after pay the loan sedepuk for 1 year (RM17,100-RM12,552) i was left with RM4,548.

This RM4,548 if you converted to 12month, un can spend RM379 per month. For me, I use this money to pay my car installent which is RM380 monthly.

So basicly, in 25 years (age 47) I have RM200k saving with RM17,100 profit of amount generated each year.

Until that time come, I have no liabity on my car. Its like having a car for free!

So kesimpulanya, korang tak payah susah susah kira untung rugi ASB ni sebenarnya. Bank making how much money pun, you tak lose anything pun. Because you start with RM0. Just invest untuk tahun pertama. Ikut selera. Kalau miss pun tak apa. Bulan depan boleh sambung. So dengan cara ni, korang secure 100k or 200k untuk masa tua korang (specially kepada yang kerja swasta and tak ada pencen) and duit bulan-bulan yang korang saving sendiri tu boleh generate quicker income or use in emergency time. This is good because the 200k you borrow cannot be withdraw. Sebab bank simpan sijil asb yang original until fully paid.

So the loan is to secure your retirement, and then monthly saving for your youth lifetime. Hope this help.

p/s: By the way, you can loan up to RM400K now. I know this because I have reach that number. ^_^

Salam,
saya rasa calculator tu x brp tepat laa..sbb dividen kira berdasarkan baki setiap bulan(kdg2 setiap hari)
maksudnya seperti berikut:
kes 1:

([7%+2%] x (365hari – [31hari bln Januari+19hari bln Feb])/365
= RM77.67 shj

“Gagal merancang = merancang utk gagal”
