Iphone 3G in Malaysia?

Written by Irwan on June 10, 2008 – 4:58 am

It’s quite disappointing that after a long, hopeful waiting, Iphone 3G won’t be officially launched in Malaysia. It’s sadder still, our southern neighbor, Singapore, is included in the official release soon. Heck, even Botswana is included.

However, as we already know, Malaysia is full of dedicated Iphone bringers. I myself will try my best to fulfill Malaysian’s hunger of these ’Twice as fast. Half the price’ Iphone. I’ll update with the link to my bulk later.

Update: Many news confirm that activation for the Iphone will be on the spot. Meaning they won’t let you leave the store if you don’t activate your phone. At the moment, there is possible way for me to conduct my bulk yet.

Even more Update: The best place to get Iphone is New Zealand as its iphones are officially unlocked. So no need warranty-voiding hack or sim-adapter hassle. However the price is not very nice and friendly now as it’s retailed at 979NZD and 1129NZD for 8gb and 16gb respectively.

Shen reply on July 2nd, 2008:

Jerry depending on where you buy it. AND with or without contract. Without then no. No jailbreak required BUT it will cost u i believe cheapest ive found is 1900 - 3000 riggit. With contract. yes you will need to unlock. but then again there are penalties… etc… its complicated.

    [Reply]

  23. Shen Says:

I’ve been looking alot in to the whole iphone 3g release thing and different ways to get around the system and so far i believe its gonna be pretty difficult to get a good cheap unlocked one. To the guy who said i’m gonna get one in canada cheap bla bla bla. unfortunately its not that simple. u need to register into a 1 and half yr contract with the company and probably pay a fine if u cancel early. and it will be a expensive fine at that. I’m in switzerland now where the iphone will be released and even with that it i’m still hesistant on buying one. apparently they will be selling unlocked iphones in europe but they ofcourse are not idiots an unlocked iphone will cost quite abit more and go to as much as 600 USD thats RM1800 give or take. So even if you do find an unlocked one on malaysian soil the odds that it is under RM1800 ringgit are minimal at best. However Irwan if you do manage to smuggle some cheap locked ones over and THEN unlock them and be able to sell them for a more reasonable price. Do let me know. And as a courtesy if I figure it out i’ll let you know as well. :) You have my email.

if that really was true it would break so many rules that apple has implemented to keep the iphone 3g within their `boundaries` so if that really were true, there will be noise. Lots of noise.

    [Reply]

Irwan reply on July 7th, 2008:

200 is with contract, u have to pay around 70usd per month for the contract. at its launch, apple will not selling it online. and the contract is signed in the store itself.

    [Reply]

  40. bestman Says:

so its somehow imposable to buy it from the states
:( so have to wait for officially release in Malaysia thats not good ,cuz i have been waiting on this i phone for months and not in Malaysia may be if i go to Singapore and try to buy it there.

Natasha reply on July 12th, 2008:

I am from new zealand and i think Vodafone Nz i actually riping the customers off by trying to sell the iphone for $549 and a two year contract for $80 a month, that comes to $6000 for the two years. We can get The 8gb iphone for 979.00 but then we cant use the data.it sucks

  41. bestman Says:

and which line will work wit the i phone in Malaysia

    [Reply]

Shen reply on July 7th, 2008:

it doesn’t matter which line. when a phone is ‘jailbroken’ it can technically b used with any and all networks… and no don’t bother to wait for it to come out in malaysia. it probably never officially will.

    [Reply]

bestman reply on July 8th, 2008:

so how can i get in singapore and for how much.? since it will not be out in malaysia.

    [Reply]

Irwan reply on July 8th, 2008:

iphone in singapore will be sold under contract too. I don’t have information on how much it will be.

  42. bestman Says:

so where do you think is the best place to get it in asia

    [Reply]

  43. bisu Says:

Sadly said, in US you need subscribe to a 2-year subscription agreement with AT&T before you can purchase it. You are required to unlock the iphone in-store where you bought it after you have signed the subscription agreement. However, AT&T reported that they also will sell the non-agreement iphone however, AT&T did not say anything about unlocking those iphone.

Assuming this is implemented in other countries such as Singapore. I guess we need to hold on to buy those 3g Iphone before anyone can unlock and jailbreak it.

    [Reply]

  44. Far8 Says:

    Hello there…
I wanna asked something about this “twice speed half price” iphone. Is it necessary for this iphone to be unlocked like the previous one?

    [Reply]

  45. Far8 Says:

If it need to be unlocked, why this iphone is launched in several country? come on man..think about it.is that possible that one of this country sell this iphone without contract? if it so, that will be good news for those like me who don’t want their iphone to be unlocked.

    [Reply]

Shen reply on July 9th, 2008:

You should read up more on the iphone. Its unlocked in france at germany for about 1000 euros. If they have contract they are STILL locked to a specific service provider. U have to unlock it YOURSELF.

All i know is that the iphone is attach to specific provider like AT & T. However, my friend from australia told me that they charge AUS 80 to unlock the iphone but still bind with a stupid 2 yrs contract. So its pointless to buy oversea and bring it back. By the way, yeerock, RM 2850 for 8gb is absurd. However, there are still some rich malaysian that can afford ur price and my friend actually paid 3k for the first iphone last year…cheers.

    [Reply]

  64. Irwan Says:

actually the 8gb price from yee rock is quite acceptable considering the situation now. the price without contract is around 900AUD including the fee to unlock.

Here is some insider news. As of today, the iPhone 3G is looking good to reach Malaysian shores. It will be tied to a carrier. It’s not the carrier that everybody thinks it is. It’s either yellow or blue. Green no go!

All i can say is that don’t sign up with a commitment plan yet. For those who already have, start asking you provider how to get out of it.

News should start coming in around a months time.

I’ve seen lots of local sites claiming that they have iphone 3g unlocked and ready to sell. I find it quite dodgy and it could be a scam.

The only hope at the moment is to wait for local mobile companies to offer it officially in a bundling plan. Hopefully not tied with a super expensive one. Just in case you didn’t know, there’s a petition at http://www.iphone3gformalaysia.com which aims to have the 3G Iphone in Malaysia.

FYI, i have checked ebay international for an iphone from new zealand. it costs NZ dollar 1100 which translates to RM 2650. this does not include taxes and delivery charges. all-in-all, i would say it would cost us iphone-lovers RM 2800 at the most. and comment no 67 from Soo Pei has said that iphone will imminently and eventually come to malaysia. an ‘insider’ told her that. so, weight your options. till next time… bye…
