Proton Persona : Like it or Love it?

img60

I’ve heard many people congratulating Proton for finally listen to its customers. And here is my congratulation post for Proton for finally being able to produce a car that I’m proud of.

I just had my experience with the car in flesh at Perkampungan Hadhari in Kota Bharu yesterday. I really like the new refreshing color of Ribenaberries (Blueberry Tea). I’m glad that they chose that color for the exhibition. The fact that the color is being offered just to the top of the line models adds to its exclusiveness.

I heard people said Persona is just a Gen2 with boot. I thought the boot would only increase the trunk space just by a little, but I was surprised that when they said spacious, it’s really really space-ious. A great feature for family sedan.

Aside from improved overall quality, Persona also comes with affordable price. Just like what my auntie said, Persona is not just with its look, the price is also a persona (attraction). With 10% down payment, monthly payment for the top of the line model(yeah, the one with remote-controlled trunk) is just RM623. Not bad.

I regret that I didn’t bring my camera with me. If I did, this post would be full of pictures of me and the ribenaberries Persona.

More pictures and review at Paultan.

Never never buy proton!!! I have a persona (bought Oct 09). I am totally disappointed!! Problems:-
    1. Wiper start to shake and can be easily taken out!!
    2. everytime i step down from the car, yik yok sound!!
    3. When i turn my steering, again yik ok sound!!
    4. when driving down bumpy road and turning, the steering start to kling klong!!
    5. the brake, when you brake, it starts to yiiii …
    6. the front dash board, when you turn the air con to max, or drive more than 100km/hr, you’ll hear tik tak sound (like raining!!)
    7. back seat got tiny tik tik sound on and off!!

The worse part is I went for all these repair work 4 times already!!! and they only manage to fix problem no. 1 (somemore is after I have taken the car and found that the problem is still there and i drove straight away to their workshop at the back and supervise them to fix again!!! Malaysia BOLEH!!)

And everytime i told the service counter guy of these problems, they seemed so relax that they have known all these problem already, and told me its because of this la that la. but why they can’t fix it?

ha, let me tell you, like the brake problem, he said because the brake rubber piece is MADE IN MALAYSIA, only RM 30, if you wan the problem to be solved permanently, you need to change the original one RM 300 (from Japan, ha?? I tout proton is made in malaysia one, so original should be made in malaysia, why suddenly original become Japan??)

There just soooooooooo many problem with it, not to mention the blood sucking engine and bad sound insulation (u drive 100km and above, u will have to turn your radio much louder). Haiii…. tired of the car d. Eventhough it’s only 5 mths, already like 20 years. I am selling off the car and getting a 2nd hand car (not proton definitely!!)

    GOD BLESS PROTON

Kumar didnt have any major problem so far. Are you saying that you did have minor problems (a lot?). There is a problem in terms of QA (so still got quality problem); again so far no big issues (means lots of small issues?) amid it, it’s not as good as you said it is.

You don’t really paid lower price for the car. It’s the tax that you have paid lower, not the car. Take away the tax price and you’ll find that you are paying damn high for a car with such quality!!

You might not be happy, you just got used to it d. Just like Proton gets used to all the complaint from their customers!!

    hi guys,
I like get some info on proton saga BLM and persona. i plan to buy proton cars. currently i using MYVI 1000cc already going to 5 years. as point of me MYVI cars also have QC problem since i buy i sending this car to SC to repair and the spare parts are relay killing me. since day one i have repair noise at Tyre SC still not able to solve this problem. air-con not cool after six month specially when you drive long destined and now getting worst. The exzos make noise like the pipe sharking every early morning. even you worm up the engine. my clutch plate getting hard (after 1 year+++) need to change clutch plate cost you round (rm600). O2 sensor faulty engine light always ON price cost of the sensor is RM380 with engine tuning. back Absorber faulty after 1 year ++++ cost of the part is (RM 230 include installation).Cost of changing timing belt , bearing , oil bush , power staring belt, air-con belt cost around RM500 (the price relay expensive compare to proton parts)…….and so ONNNNNNN…… all the this parts i change at NORMAL WORKSHOP not at SC . because SC not able to solve my problem even my car in warranty. so i go for out local workshop. …..This may happen to my car only you may get info from other MYVI user.

Sampai sekarang dah 2 tahun pakai, aku dapati minyak semakin jimat. untuk tank penuh kereta aku boleh pi sampai 500 lebih km berbanding dulu. aku memang selalu hantar servis kat EON. Aku ada benda nak syer dgn korang semua, ni antara tips nak dpt kereta perodua baru dlm keadaan baik. Hampa semua kena servey bila staf perodua dapat bonus tinggi. Time tu kereta2 yg depa pasang dlm keadaan baik, sebab depa sgt happy dapat duit byk. Jgn terus attack salesman bila dpt kereta tak bagus, sebab depa cuma jual kereta saja…bukan pasang kereta. Mulut depa sentiasa manis macam gula. Nak tinted free, spoiler free pun depa sanggup adakan…tapi aku tak tau pulak pasal Proton. Ada sapa2 nak komen?

Grabus, don’t talk too soon. I was thinking on the same line as you, but wait till your car is 1 or 2 yrs old, then you’ll be talking differently. 5 yrs warranty? you better go ask what exactly does the warranty covers. I did and I felt so cheated. My stupid Persona before one year, battery konk, and they say no warranty because my milleage just exceeded 10k. Then brake pad problem, just changed 3 mths ago and now it’s broken again. Normal brake pad is RM67.71 excluding labour, but no warranty. Advised me to use Bosch which comes with 6 mths warranty, guess how much… RM350!! I ask technician if he ever come across cases like this, he said first time, it’s my luck…
Then there’s a problem with the tyre bearing and needs to be changed, RM154 plus labour RM35, again no warranty.
Apart from this, other problems include the air cond, got hantu. It comes on and off on it’s own, bila suka. Sensor pun problem. Brought to workshop to change and they scratched my bumper, now got one long line. Made complaint, they say bring back we check. I dare not, wait they add a few more lines.
Not forgetting the frustration when dealing with the workshop. Call them till the cow comes home nobody pick up the line, or they pick it and put down again so the ringing doesn’t bother them. After that you can never get them on the phone again. Call at the wrong time, they’re having tea break. Typical lah. This will never ever happen at Toyota workshop.
It has been 20 yrs and their service and quality leaves much to be desired. Will I still buy a Proton next? NEVER AGAIN! Don’t want to be a fool twice! Lots of people ask me, I say never buy Proton. So whether you want to be a fool or not, I say up to you, try your luck if you dare. Thank you.

Yes, i agreed with Sheerona, what is the 5 years warranty covers?? I’ve a two years plus Persona, just after 4 mths, the dashboard got bubbles, driver side door water leak in. After another month or 2, car boot can’t open with remote and then radiator leak and worst no WARRANTY. When reaching a year front disk drum not even need to be changed and same as Sheerona kena RM350 just for the brake pad. Just after 1 1/2 years, power window konk again no warranty! Then, front bearing got sound, send to Proton Edar to check waited whole day and no mechanic said no problem. Went to another services centre and found the bearing konk and no warranty also. why? wear and tear part warranty not cover. So what is the warranty covers??? do you still want a Proton??

Im also driving the persona since thats the only car within my budget. Well not so surprise with the 5 years warranty since it is only cover for engine. and the other parts of car still come with 2 years or month(s) warranty as usual proton cars. And also the warranty not cover for plastic or rubber parts. FYI, most of proton cars they wont deliver to the customer with the alignment done etc. So, just make sure that after get the car u need to do the alignment by ur own. And one of the mechanic did told me that most of Proton cars will use “skru mati” to the tyres instead of flexible screw (that can save ur tyres for easily “haus” or “botak”). I did change mine.

I am thinking of buying Pesona HL but with the negative comments, I am thinking twice. I can accept that in a batch of 10 maybe one is faulty even in high branded car, but the problem lies with the warranty and the backup service provided from Proton as mentioned by some of you. It is either non-existent or take too long. Again is this isolated case only or most of Proton service center is as bad. Where can I find the warranty statement in Proton web-site. How good is the mileage? For example, how much is cost you if travel from JB to KL?

Yes no doubt that every Tom Dick and Harry is comparing perodua and proton. To me its a matter of what you like. I personally like the design, interior and price tag on a proton car. To me it makes a different when space comes to play comparing with perodua’s compact car. Not to compare, but like i said, its personal likings.

I own a persona elegance HL for 6 months now. Previously was a saga, merdeka edition.
    Pros :
Extremely spacious. Great leather. Fun to drive. Very stable. Great sound system. Dashboard meter is stunning. Spacious boot. Value for money for the price i pay.

    Cons:
High Petrol Consumption. QC issue, replace rubber visor on my left side just after 3 days, then i notice, quite obvious that they are either blind or definitely no QC control. High rev when your engine is cold in the morning.

Either then that, its really great to have the car if you ask me. It is not as bad as most of you out there think it is due to the flooding comments online. My aunt uses a Gen 2 and it is problemless and my mum and cousins uses Proton New FL, so far no problem and my friend uses a persona 2008, only problem is the sound in the breaks. Either then that its alright. So, my questions is, do you really own those cars to comment and furthermore i have so many relatives who uses proton and do not face those type of problems that everyone is claiming. Perhaps its just your luck in getting those cars or you guys are fussy over small problems. I believe that, you guys are paying for something which is not up to Japan’s standard and thus the complain. People tend to compare proton with second hand Honda and Toyota which i think is ridiculous.

Moving forward, perodua has problems of their own as well. Although there are lesser problems, but if you notice the QC is not as fantastic as everyone claims as well. I am not saying that its not a good car, it is still worth to buy but to me, i dont like the plastic interior for the price i pay 45k and it still looks plastic and small. Its good for female drivers especially parking and all, but its too girlish for a guy to drive that car and thus me buying a proton persona for the same price. To me, perodua is not worth the price. Super downfall of the car is that, there is no boot!! How can i put things when i need the space. That car should cost 40k for HL, then i will say its worth the money. Its 55k for HL, ridiculous.

Concluding, its actually a matter of opinion and your personal liking.

I bought a second hand H-line Persona (blueberry-tea colored) four moths earlier, and I enjoy every seconds of driving it. The initial owner bought it in April 2009, and so far , fortunately, no problem whatsoever, save for the minor things like low rattling sound from dashboard. Oh, I live in Jakarta, Indonesia, so it must be the export version, yes ? The engine is more than enough for city driving , even when compared to other brand of automobile found here. Comes with safety features such as dual-airbag, ABS, EBD, etc. for the same price as other brand that’s equipped with less features. Torque problem should be handled with the change of driving style and get-to-know the car’s “character” better. Have I mentioned that it’s fun to drive and has great handling ?

Go ahead and buy a persona, but do remember it is a petrol guzzler. With the price of petrol sure to go up, think again. My Merc C200 has better consumption than a Persona!

    hi everybody.

better u choose persona compared than myvi if you care a lot about handling performance. it is because, persona’s handling performance is superb. Myvi handling is okay but from my experience in driving so many cars such as perdana, waja, gen2, iswara super tank, myvi also, kancil, honda, toyota and others related, i think proton handling is really superb. Like mitsubishi handling could be. In addition, myvi still have problems of absorber, there will be some sound will appear and we can hear precisely when driving on district road. By the way, off course honda handling is superb but it too costly to us as malaysian.

anyway, that is my opinion only.

bought my persona m line on dec last year….nw clocked 19k

fc is getting better than previously when i first bought the car..
handling is good both at high and low speed.
    spacious boot.

    cons..
cannot start the engine after 3 days getting the car, sent to the sc and they fixed it…so far no problem.
8 months after, rear door leaked, caused the floor flooded with water..sent to the sc and they fixed it for free…thnk god still under warranty.the supervisor told me that the rubber that sealed the window is not properly attached..so the water can sipped in through the gap…
9 months after, fuel tank got problem..when u refuelling, the fuel leak once the tank is full…previously this has never happenned…got to send the car to the sc again…anyone face the same problem?

Proton has not improved much after so many years. Even though they are still considered ‘young’ in the automotive arena, it does not mean that they cannot learn from others right? After all, even if they learn to make all the mistakes by themselves, 26 years is enough time to really improve. Just did my 1st service today…waited almost the whole day to get the car back. Why took so long? Well…
    1. Left side rear lamp does not work when brake is activated (changed under warranty)
    2. Front passenger & driver power window making grinding noise while winding up / down (waiting for spare part)
    3. CD cannot be ejected from radio (radio removed from dashboard, 1 month repair period)
    4. Creaking noise from suspension. They tightened the undercarriage mounting. So far seems okay.
    5. Transmission has a slight thud (R to D) when vehicle is hot. Claimed to have adjusted some parts in the tranny. So far the thud is still present.

If there is one credit I can give to them, at least the SC tried their best to handle all my complaints! For #5 looks like I may have to make repeated complaints to get it looked at. Sigh!!
